Hutton Horticultural Society: 2011 Annual Show

Show Secretary Doug Jewell writes-

This year’s secretarial team comprising Doug & Margaret Jewell and Andrew & Margaret Monkman certainly had their work cut out with another bumper show. Open Class Entries this year at 808 almost met last year’s total of 817. In addition to this of course, were about 600 splendid entries from the children attending our local school plus those at Little Owls Playgroup. We just about found room to display them in all their glory and thanks must go to all staff and helpers for ensuring that they were completed and presented in good time. Every child deserves a pat on the back for their efforts in bringing colour and enthusiasm to the show; Today’s Children = Tomorrow’s Hutton!

Trophies were fairly well spread across the under-16 entrants notably with Grace Edwards collecting two; The Austine York Cup for most points in the “Children to Year 2” Classes and the “Doris Lovell Salver” for best exhibit.

Fewer entries were received in the Floral Classes this year due to the absence of several show stalwarts for a variety of family and personal reasons. However all was not lost due the valiant efforts of Mike Higgins of Bridgwater with his usual magnificent (and often sole) entries of Chrysants and Dahlias. Consequently he was awarded a total of 18 trophies and medals including this year’s new “Landmark Trophy” in memory of Peter Kellaway, for the best Gladiolus spike. Unfortunately, Mike could not be there in person to collect them all! The remainder of the floral trophies were spread across several entrants who again delighted us all with their beautiful and fragrant entries.

Three of the fruit & vegetable awards went to Alan Athay of Weston who has been entering for perhaps more years than he cares to remember. Paul Martin ( a man who knows his onions!) of Moor Lane came shining through with three awards for best exhibits in the open Veg. Classes together with that coveted Bob Chedzey award for the heaviest onion. Brian Cooper also collected three well deserved trophies from his almost record entry of 40 classes in this year’s show. Most points in the villagers Veg. Classes brought him the John Lovell Memorial Trophy, the Bendor Salver for most points in the Allotment Holders Veg. Classes and the May Mitchel Cup for the best exhibit in the fruit classes.

Whilst on this subject, it’s always good to inject a little humour into what for many, is a serious business. In the past we have had someone make a cucumber sandwich with an entrant’s cucumber entry the night before the show! This year it was rumoured that Brian Cooper, maybe not content with his 40 or so entries, tried to sneak a late entry into the “SQUASH” class by running over one of his cabbages when manoeuvring his car in the tight surroundings of the show field. In a light hearted fashion, he was duly presented with a special award at the end of the show; “The Honda Civic Reversing Award” for the best squashed cabbage!

Photography is a growing section with 120 entries this year. We will need to review how we display these to best affect in future shows and also to avoid the effects of the breeze that plagued us this year. This section was cleaned up by Catherine Hanley who gained both Photographic trophies. However it was evident that many show goers enjoyed viewing the wide variety and quality of photographs on show.

Domestic is always a hotly contested area (especially for modern man), and whilst Dorothy Butcher again collected many awards in the open classes, Nicholas Davis from Weston secured the Ian Memorial trophy for his Victoria sponge. However, it was Macauley Lovell who took the biscuit and , at under 16 years of age, snatched the Riverside Trophy for Men vs. Women. Very well done!

Forgiveness is sought from winners not mentioned in this report, which is only intended to highlight the taste of the show. Full details of all winners, points awarded etc are published on the Parish website (www.huttonsomerset.org.uk)

As well as all those who faithfully do the donkey work each year in setting up the show, our thanks also goes to our brave judges who must have had a very difficult time in deciding the awards and to the stewards who ensured that all went smoothly. Finally of course, thanks to ALL entrants in the show, for without you, there would be no show. It is a rarity nowadays for a village of our size to put on a large traditional show in a marquee. It was particularly encouraging this year to see a good number of new entrants and we hope that people will be inspired to have a go in future years. It’s one of the things that keeps Hutton a special and good place to live.

Whilst taking a break from the secretary’s desk in the afternoon, how good it was to see the children enjoying traditional sports games on the field, others bouncing around on the bouncy castle, the thud of the coconut shy, people of all ages relaxing in the sunshine enjoying their ice creams, catching up with friends old and new............

The quintessential Somerset village on a summer afternoon!
